The bales are coming back. On that note, do I run studded tires this winter or nah?

NOT READY TO LOSE MY 90° WEATHER SHUT UP SHUT UP.
(Of course it’s only been high 70s lately, idiot global warming failing to live up to e xpectations.)

They’re very close now, say the Norwegian tests. Continental’s Viking Contact 7 did as well as or better than Nokian’s Hakkapeliitta 9s.
I have the latter, and I’ve previously used the Hakka 8.
For winter I focus on what’s the worst road conditions I might encounter? So I go studded.
I'm putting Hakka 9s on my Alltrack this winter.

Seen those everywhere.
And no, not in my opinion, although I don’t winter where you do.

High 70s is my favorite kind of weather. You can keep the 90°+ weather (it's consistently been 95° despite daily heavy rain).

I feel like the weather has been cooler due to the lesser amount of cars on the roads.

No top, no doors at 75+ . No windshield at 85+ . I prefer no windshield.

I saw frozen precipitation this weekend in Southern New Mexico, at about 2700 meters in elevation up in the mountains. Four continuous hours of hail dropped temperatures to just above freezing and coated the entire mountain in 3-4 inches of hail. Needless to say, my two-day backpacking trip beca me a legitimately bad situation that called for turning a two day hike with weight into a one day forced march to get off the mountain before we lost daylight and the prospect of really dangerous night. I was glad to not have called upon the authorities to launch a search and rescue operation, and I learned my partner on the trip (a former colleague from the university and fellow member of the library drinking club) is tougher than a few Marines I served with. That she kept it together and kept pushing well beyond her limits while in stage two hypothermia was key to us getting off the mountain with only sore bodies and a good story. Sadly, neither of us took any pictures after the first few minutes of the hail to regale Oppo with. I did get to use my ice scraper once we got to the Pajero that was parked at our ending point, which would be the first time I’ve done that in August.

Maybe I like low 80s more. I like a nice brisk air but not too cold. Basically a fine fall day is ideal. Maybe I would change my mind if I had a Jeep.

I’ve never run studded but 90% of the time The roads are plowed well enough to not be ice coated messes. I have Michelin x-ice and they have been great for the 2-3 seasons I have had them. Great tire wear and holds great traction in all conditions. Obviously not as great on ice as studded would be

I’m trying to pick between the Hakkas (studded vs non-studded) and Viking Contacts. I’ve only heard good things about the Hakkas.

I can smell that picture. Fresh cut hay and old axle grease.

Viking Contacts are just as good. Pick based on price? Hakkas aren't the cheapest.

About $25 CAD difference per tire.

I have vredesteins on my wife's car as an all season and love them. Several times I asked my wife how she handled the ice and snowon the road and she said she didn't even notice it.

Your homies at the Sk Studded Tire Club translated the reviews. http://www.skstuds.ca/2020/01/15/the-2019-naf-winter-tire-test-introduces-continentals-flexstud/
I'd go Hakka 9. Else Viking Contact 7

I say yes to studs. I have the Nordman 7 studless, and sort of wish I would have gone for the studded ones.

It’s a toss up between the R3 and Viking Contact 7 at this point.

I’ve spent of lot of time doing stuff like that, and plenty solo, and this was first time I got into something was legitimately dangerous. The forecast had called for some thunderstorms and a cool night, and we were well prepared for that, but that storm ended up being so far beyond anything forecasted. It would’ve taken full stop cold weather gear and probably a mountaineering grade tent to ride out the night safely, so the only option was to get off the mountain after about the first thirty minutes of hail. Between the inches of hail on the ground, the mud, ankle deep water and the ground sloughing away beneath us with each step (a narrow, steep mountain rim trail largely cut into steep side slopes) it was an untenable situation. The storm hit when we at about the halfway point of the trail, so there was no easy way to bail out in either direction. Doing that entire trail section in one day, in those conditions carrying weight was at least as hard, if not harder, than anything I ever did in the Marine Corps. I have a lot of respect and admiration for my partner who had never endured that degree of adversity and sustained physical effort with real consequences riding on it.

It’s amazing what adrenaline and accepting that there’s no other option can do.

Indeed. I knew I could get off the mountain, but I don’t know if I could’ve gotten both of us off the mountain if the other half had given up.
Best decision made: packing my full (former) military issue rain gear. I almost elected to save weight and take only a lightweight, packable rain jacket. We also didn’t hesitate to make the call the get off the mountain pretty early on.
Worst decision: I finally took out a 4L bladder of water from my pack and dumped it a few miles from the end. The resulting 9lbs less weight on my back was glorious. We both should’ve dumped about half the water and food we had on us as soon as there was no other option but to get off the mountain. Two full days of food and water (plus some, because I’m cautious like that) was only weight that didn’t help us get off the mountain faster.

In that case I'd go Viking Contact 7. I also have the R3s, and they're not quite as good on ice. They're on my second car.

Autumn, you say? Saw these yesterday. Sweet chestnuts and brown leaves. Autumn.

Yep, and studs are good for buying one for your concrete and asphalt company-owning friend. So your automotive purchases really depend on your peer group.
